This is Jashoda, a Chaiwalla -tea planter in Darjeeling. Her family came from Sikkim and her smiles are 85 years strong. Her great grand daughter Shrutika will be the sixth generation to carry on the Chaiwalla tradition of tea picking in their family.
She shared with us how they came to Darjeeling for work and they would stand on bricks to make themselves look taller, because if you were tall you got work! We met her grandson, Ranjan, while staying at Glenburn Tea Estate and they invited us into their home. We felt honored and loved learning from them about life in Darjeeling.
